Acne (Pimples)

These are pimples on the face, chest or back or in scientific term it is called as Acne skin disease. In its mild form, you may get a few scattered blackheads or whiteheads, which come and go. Severe acne is persistent and you may get large, swollen cysts. This type of acne may cover most of the part of your face, chest or back. It is not contagious. Acne is most common in teenagers. Acne is built into your genes; it runs in families.

Hormonal problems rarely cause acne. If acne is not treated, it may leave scarring. Because of this, it is a good idea to treat it as soon as signs appear. See a doctor if acne becomes severe. Small white spots or lumps on newborn babies are not pimples. They are known as milia, and should not be squeezed. They are harmless and will usually clear up without any treatment.

Some simple treatments from a pharmacy, such as benzyl peroxide 5% gel, can help. Your doctor may prescribe a cream or lotion to help dissolve blackheads and prevent new lesions forming. For severe pimples, taking antibiotic capsules over a number of months is effective. They usually have few or no side effects and are safe to take for a long time. A doctor who specializes in skin problems can prescribe other effective treatments for pimples. You can avoid making it worse by getting enough sleep and exercise, and generally living a healthy lifestyle. Diet rarely plays any role in acne. However, it is always wise to choose a nutritious diet from a mix of foods. Use loose face powder rather than liquid, creamy or oily cosmetics while ever you have acne.
